The 1858 Twenty Cents is one of the most fascinating coins in Canadian numismatics. Not only was it part of the first decimal coinage issued for the Province of Canada, but it was also the only year this denomination was ever struck, making it a true one-year type coin. A total of 730,392 pieces were minted in London, England, before the denomination was quickly abandoned.
Struck in 92.5% sterling silver, the coin weighs 4.65 grams and measures 23.3 mm in diameter. It features a youthful portrait of Queen Victoria on the obverse, while the reverse displays the denomination within a wreath topped by a crown. Both sides were designed by Leonard Charles Wyon.
The denomination proved unpopular because its size was very similar to the American quarter, leading to confusion in circulation. As a result, Canada replaced the twenty-cent piece with the familiar 25-cent quarter beginning in 1870.
Today, the 1858 Twenty Cents remains a favorite among collectors due to its historical importance, silver content, and status as Canada's only twenty-cent coin. Numerous varieties exist, including the famous Double 5 and other die varieties that add further interest for specialists.
A true numismatic curiosity, the 1858 Twenty Cents stands alone as one of the most unique and collectible coins in Canadian history.
