The Newfoundland Twenty Cents is one of the most distinctive coins in Canadian numismatic history. Introduced in 1865, it was struck in 92.5% sterling silver and circulated throughout the Dominion of Newfoundland long before it joined Canada in 1949. Unlike the rest of Canada, Newfoundland chose the unusual 20-cent denomination, making the series highly collectible today.
The coin features portraits of Queen Victoria, King Edward VII, and King George V depending on the year of issue. Although popular in Newfoundland, the denomination was often confused with Canada's 25-cent coin because of their similar size. As a result, the twenty-cent piece was discontinued and replaced by a 25-cent coin in 1917, ending one of the most unique coin series in North American numismatics.
