The 1870 25-cent coin holds a special place in Canadian numismatic history as the first quarter ever issued by the Dominion of Canada. Introduced just three years after Confederation, it replaced the unpopular 20-cent piece of 1858 and aligned Canada's currency system more closely with that of the United States.

Struck in sterling silver (92.5% silver), the coin weighs 5.81 grams and features the portrait of Queen Victoria on the obverse, designed by Leonard Charles Wyon. The reverse displays a royal crown above two crossed maple boughs, an iconic design that would remain on Canadian quarters until 1936.

With a mintage of only 900,000 pieces, the 1870 quarter is highly sought after by collectors today. Several varieties exist, including the scarce Obverse 2 and the famous “5/5 in 25” variety, adding further interest to this historic issue.
