The Famous 1921 Canadian 5 Cents Coin

The 1921 Canadian 5 cents coin is one of the most famous rarities in Canadian numismatics, often nicknamed the “Prince of Canadian Coins,” with the 1921 50 cents holding the title of king. Although 2,582,495 coins were originally minted, the vast majority were melted after Canada transitioned from the tiny silver 5-cent pieces to the larger nickel version introduced in 1922. Today, it is believed that only around 400 genuine examples survive, making it one of the rarest and most desirable Canadian circulation coins.

Struck in 80% silver and 20% copper, this tiny “fish scale” coin weighs just 1.17 grams and features King George V on the obverse, with the classic denomination wreath design on the reverse.

In terms of value, even heavily circulated examples can sell for several thousand dollars, while higher-grade specimens can command tens of thousands at auction due to their extreme rarity and legendary status among collectors.

For Canadian collectors, owning a genuine 1921 5 cents is a dream acquisition—a true cornerstone of Canadian numismatic history.
