The 1946 "Hoof in 6" is one of the most popular and recognizable varieties in the Canadian George VI fifty-cent series. The variety is caused by a die crack and die chip extending from the unicorn’s hoof into the loop of the 6 in the date, creating the appearance that the hoof passes through the numeral. This distinctive feature makes it highly sought after by Canadian variety collectors.
Although it is included within the 950,235-piece mintage for 1946, only a small percentage of coins display the Hoof in 6 variety. Struck in 80% silver, the coin combines an interesting minting anomaly with strong collector demand, and high-grade certified examples are especially scarce and command significant premiums.
